Usage:
- Express possibility or ability when someone is able to do something or when something is possible, V-(으)ㄹ 수 있다 is used = ‘can’ in English.
- In the opposite case, V-(으)ㄹ 수 없다 is used = ‘ can’t ’ in English
- 가 is often added to the grammar to form V-(으)ㄹ 수가 있다/없다 to emphasize the phrase.

Verb ending in vowel or ㄹ + -ㄹ 수 있다/없다:
가다 -- 갈 수 있다/없다 (can/can't go)
만나다 -- 만날 수 있다/없다 (can/can't meet)
해보다 -- 해볼 수 있다/없다 (can/can't try)
*놀다 -- 놀 수 있다/없다 (can/can't play)
*살다 -- 살 수 있다/없다 (can/can't live)




Verb ending in consonant + 을 수 있다/없다:
먹다 -- 먹을 수 있다/없다 (can/can't eat)
받다 -- 받을 수 있다/없다 (can/can't receive)
*듣다 -- 들을 수 있다/없다 (can/can't listen)
*걷다 -- 걸을 수 있다/없다 (can/can't walk)
*짓다 -- 지을 수 있다/없다 (can/can't build)
*돕다 -- 도울 수 있다/없다 (can/can't help)

Examples

1. 여기에서 사진을 찍을 수 있어요. 그렇지만 저기에서 사진을 찍을 수 없어요.
You can take pictures here. But you can't take pictures there.

2. 한국말을 할 수 있지만 일본말을 할 수 없어요.
I can speak Korean but can't speak Japanese.

3. 무슨 운동을 할 수 있어요?
- 축구를 할 수 있어요. 그렇지만 농구는 할 수 없어요.
What sports can you play?
- I can play football. But I can't play basketball.

4. 우리는 저녁에 만날 수 있어요?
- 미안해요. 만날 수 없어요. 약속이 있어요.
Can we meet in the dinner?
- I am sorry. I can't.  I have an appointment.

5. 한국 TV 프로그램을 이해할 수 있어요?
- 드라마는 조금 이해할 수 있어요. 그렇지만 뉴스는 이해할 수 없어요.
Can you understand Korean TV program?
- I can understand TV drama a little. But  I can't understand the news.

6. 길이 막혀서 갈 수가 없어요.
There’s so much traffic that I really can't move at all.

7. 컴퓨터가 고장 났어요.
- 내가 고치할 수 있어요. 맡겨 줘요.
My computer is broken.
- I can fix it. Leave it to me.

8. 미래의 가전제품을 상상해볼 수 있다.
Try to imagine about the future of appliances.
