L1.25 N 중, V-는 중 grammar = in the middle of N/V, currently doing
Usage:
- Indicate that the subject is in the process of performing an action = “in the process/ middle of N/V” or “currently doing”
- V-는 중이다 and V-고 있다 have similar usage. However, while V-고 있다 can be used with any subjects, V-는 중이다 cannot be used with subjects representing natural phenomena (rain, snow, wind, fire…)
E.g.
비가 오는 중이에요. (wrong) --> 비가 오고 있어요. (correct)
Noun + 중:
임신 중 = in pregnancy
회의 중 = in the middle of a meeting
수업 중 = in the middle of a class
공사 중 = under construction
통화 중 = in the middle of a call
Verb + 는 중:
가다 -- 가는 중 = on the way, currently going
찾다 -- 찾는 중 = in the middle of searching, currently searching
공사하다 -- 공사하는 중 = under construction
배우다 -- 배우는 중 = currently learning
회의하다 -- 회의하는 중 = in the middle of a meeting
통화하다 -- 통화하는 중 = in the middle of a call
밥 먹다 -- 밥 먹는 중 = currently eating
*만들다 -- 만드는 중 = currently making
Examples:
1. 그 건물은 공사 중입니다./ 그 건물은 공사하는 중입니다.
That building is under construction.
2. 지금 집에 가는 중이에요.
I am on the way home.
3. 집을 이사하고 싶어요. 그래서 집을 찾는 중이에요.
I plan to move my house. So I’m looking are a new one.
4. 운전면허증 있어요?
- 요즘 운전을 배우는 중이에요. 다음 주에 운전면허 시험을 봐요.
Do you have a driver’s license.
- I am learning to drive now. I will take a driving test next week.
5. 왜 이렇게 길이 막혀요?
- 앞 길이 공사 중이에요. 그래서 길이 막혀요.
Why is the traffic so jammed?
- The front road is under construction. That’s why it’s jammed.
6. 아내가 임신 중이에요. 다음 달에 출산할 거예요.
My wife is in pregnancy. She will give birth in next month.
7. 나는 수업 중이에요. 나중에 전화할게요.
I am in class now. I will call you later.
8. 나 지금 밥 먹는 중이니까 나중에 전화할게요.
I am currently eating now, so I will call you later.
9. 열쇠를 찾는 중이에요.
I am in the middle of finding my key.
