Usage:
- Direct quotation is word-for-word quoting of what someone said, thought, or wrote.
- Sentence structure:
"Quoted speech" +하고/라고 + verb
- 하고 is often used in written texts while 라고 is often used in everyday conversations and speech.
- Common ending verb:
말하다 = speak
이야기하다 = talk
그러다 = indicate, say
무러보다 = ask
생각하다 = think
부탁하다 = request
쓰다 = write
듣다 = listen
써 있다 = be written
Examples
1. 에디슨은 "실패는 성공의 어머니입니다"라고 했어요.
Edison said "Failure is the mother of success".
2. 예수님은 "서로 사랑하세요."라고 말씀했어요.
Jesus said "Love each other".
3. 안나 씨는 "한국어를 같이 공부합시다."라고 말했어요.
Anna said "Let's study Korean together".
4. 그 여자가 뭐라고 말했어요?
- "도와 주세요"라고 말했어요.

- "Happy birthday" was written on the card.
