Usage :
- Express speaker’s intention/purpose (1st clause) for doing the action (2nd clause)
- Mostly for official usage,e.g. give a speech or writing report.- Express speaker’s intention/purpose (1st clause) for doing the action (2nd clause)

Examples :
1. 이 회사에 지원한 이유가 무엇입니까?
- - 제가 어렸을 때부터 가지고 있던 꿈을 펼쳐 보고자 지원하게 되었습니다.
Why did you apply to work for this company?
- - I applied because I want to realize my dream that I have had since I was little.
2. 앤디 씨! 이 시간에 무슨 일이에요?
- - 더, 부탁을 좀 드리고자 전화 드렸습니다.
Andy, why are you calling at this time?
- - Um, I am calling to ask you a favor.
3. 정부는 새로운 일자리를 창출하고자 열심히 노력하고 있습니다.
The government is working hard to create new jobs.
4. 부모님께 드리고자 이 물건을 구입했습니다.
I bought this item to give my parents.
5. 회사 다니는 사람들 술을 많이 마시지요?
- - 네, 스트레스를 풀고자 술을 많이 마시는 것 같습니다.
The company staffs drink a lot of alcohol, right?
- - Yes, it seems they drink a lot to release the stress.
6. 두 나라는 좋은 관계를 유지하고자 새로운 조약을 맺었습니다.
The 2 countries signed an agreement to maintain good relations.
7. 이 제품이 지속적으로 좋은 반응을 얻고 있어서 생산량을 늘리고자 합니다.
This product continues to get good reviews, so we plan to increase its production.
8. 부모님을 모시고 가기 때문에 KTX를 타고자 합니다.
Because of gathering with my parents, I plan to take the KTX.
9. 회사 분위기를 좋게 만들고자 노력하고 계십니다.
He is working hard to get good position in the company.
10. 오늘 환경문제에 대해 이야기하고자 합니다.
I plan to talk about the environment issue today.
Specific usage :
1. The subject of both clauses must be the same.
E.g. 나는 취직하고자 (나는) 열심히 공부를 했습니다. -- I studied hard to get a job.
2. Past tense 았/었 or future tense -갰- can’t be used before -고자.
3. Can be used at the end of sentence -고자 하다 (=plan to) to express intention.
4. Negative particles 안 and 못 can’t be used after -고자 하다.
E.g. 우리는 그 회사와 계약을 하고자 안 합니다. (Wrong).
우리는 그 회사와 계약을 안 하고자 합니다. (Correct).
